Vinaya Pais, Kundapur for KM

Kundapur, Oct 8: Property worth over Rs 25 lac was destroyed/damaged after fire broke out in a warehouse belonging to an electronic shop in the heart of the town on Wednesday October 8.

The blaze, which was first sighted in a corner of Sushan Plaza here at about 8 am, spread to the entire warehouse soon. The fire was ignited by the bursting of the generator located inside the warehouse, sources revealed.

A total of five fire engines struggled for several hours to control the flames. The fire could be brought under control at about 12.30 pm. Meanwhile, the narrow roads leading to the spot proved to be a hurdle for the movement of the fire engines and this delayed the operation. A petrol bunk is also located close to the warehouse in which the fire was started. Therefore, the incident put the locals and fire fighters under tremendous pressure.

Dark, thick smoke emanating from the fire site spread over the entire area of the town and nearby villages, after the warehouse started burning. Three persons were admitted to a hospital, as they fell sick owing to the inhalation of smoke. The residents staying in the flats, located adjacent to the warehouse, were evacuated immediately. A crowd of more than 5,000 people gathered at the scene of the accident, to watch the operation.
