Udupi: Centre committed to curbing terrorism: Oscar - 9/14/2008
The Hindu<P>Udupi: Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment Oscar Fernandes said on Sunday that the Union Government was doing all it could to curb terrorism. </P>
<P>Speaking to presspersons here, Mr. Fernandes said that there were intelligence reports about terrorist activities. But even these reports could not exactly pinpoint where the blasts would take place. The Union Government had taken all precautionary measures and when the matters concerned the State Governments, it had passed on the relevant information to them. “In spite of all the measures, the blasts have taken place which is unfortunate. People’s support is also needed to curb terrorism,” he said.</P>
<P>Asked if the Centre would bring back POTA in light of the bomb blasts in Delhi and other places, Mr. Fernandes said that there were enough laws in the States to deal with terrorism. But if the States felt that they required more laws, the Centre would consider the issue. </P>
<P>On the appointment of new president for the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, Mr. Fernandes said that it would take place shortly. All the discussions in this regard had been completed. “It may even happen within a week,” he said. </P><FONT class=subsectionhead color=red size=3>Attacks condemned </FONT>

<P>On the attacks on prayer halls in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Chikmagalur districts, Mr. Fernandes said that he condemned the attacks on certain sections of society. “All efforts should be made to maintain harmony and peace,” he said. </P>
<P>On the coal-based 1,015 MW thermal power project coming up at Yellur in Udupi district, he said that he personally preferred a gas-based power project. But he had learnt that the prices of the gas had shot up. </P>
<P>“The matter is also before the Supreme Court. We have to look into all aspects,” he said. </P>
<P>On the poor condition of National Highway 17, Mr. Fernandes said that he had already taken up the issue with the Union Ministry of Surface Transport. The repair works on the highway would begin after the monsoon, Mr. Fernandes said. </P>

Dubai: Thottamites in UAE(Sakath) celebrated Monthi Fest - 9/13/2008
sakathDubai: On Friday, 12th September 2008, Thottam Parishioners in the UAE gathered at the residence of one of the founder member Alfred DSouza to celebrate the feast of Nativity of Our Lady – Monthi Fest.
The small children entered in a procession and surrounded the statue of Monthi Saibin (Infant Mary) that was decorated with flowers. The Spiritual Director, Rev. Fr. Freddy D Souza led the opening prayers. The assembled sang the traditional hymns – Sokkod Sangatha Meliya and Moriek Hogolsia and the children, joyfully, offered flowers to Infant Mary.
There was a surprise for the assembled. The cakes were brought in. The host, Alfred and Carol cut the wedding anniversary cake (the day coincided with their wedding anniversary). The previous day was the birthday of their son, Carl and he too cut the birthday cake to the applause of the gathering with the appropriate songs sung by the gathering.
Mind Blowing games were conducted by the Sports Secretary, Mr. Ravi Almeida and his team.while housie was conducted by Mr William Fernandes with his unique style The prizes were given away to the winners.
People had their meal in the traditional way sitting on the ground. Traditional meal – Novem Jevan – was served on banana leaves. There were number of home made vegetable dishes – Pathrode, chana, beans, karathem, etc… to name a few and Modmaso fish curry to go with the rice. The sweet – vorn – was excellent.
The day reminded us the celebrations back at home our dear Thottam.

Brahmavar: Grand Ganesh Chaturthi of Brahmavar Draws to Colourful End - 9/12/2008
daijiworldUdupi, Sep 9: After a week-long worship, the idol of Lord Ganesh installed at by the local committee of the public Ganeshotsav at Brahmavar, was taken for immersion in a procession on Sunday September 7.
The procession started from the Government Primary School, Bramavar, and made its way past the old bus stand, police station, AIR complex, Gandhi maidan and culminated at the lake in the Sri Mahalingeshwar temple. A colourful display of crackers was held at the Gandhi maidan enroute the procession.
Thousands of devotees joined the procession and witnessed the immersion of the deity's idol in the temple lake.

Thottam: Montifest celebration at St. Ann's Church, Thottam - 9/10/2008

Keeping up with tradition and custom in Christian Community, Thottam Parishioners celebrated the feast of Nativity of Our Lady on Monday, 8th September with fervour and all its grandeur.
The celebration started at 7.30 a.m. The people assembled on the open ground in front of the stage. In the front line were children standing in semi circle holding trays decked flowers. On the dais, the twelve Gurkars were standing with the new corn in their hands.
In his opening words, the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Louis DSa focused on the importance of the day, saying, the new blessed corn is a sign of all new things in our lives. The new corn that is blessed on her (Mother Mary s) Birthday helps us bring new life in us and enables us to renew our devotion to our Heavenly Mother. Invoking God’s grace, Fr. DSa blessed the new corn.
Following the blessing of the new corn, the faithful proceeded with devotion to the church in a procession, singing hymns praising Mother Mary. The band was leading followed by the Crucifix, Congregation, Altar Servers, Gurkars and the Celebrant. It was a pleasant sight seeing the small children worshipping Mother Mary with flowers at the chorus – Moriek Hogolsia, Hogolsia Moriek. The festivity feeling was evident.
The Eucharistic celebration began at 8.00 a.m. with the entrance hymn – Chalya ami ghara Devacha. The whole congregation joined the choir in singing and offered the Festive Mass.
In his homily, Fr. DSa wished the faithful on this festivity and reminded that over two thousand years ago, the PLAN and WILL of The Almighty Father laid foundation for the salvation of mankind. Almighty Father started His work and chose Joachim and Anna. He blessed this couple with a Baby Girl, the one who was to be the Mother of Jesus Christ. Today, the whole world celebrates Mother Mary s birthday and it is a great pleasure to celebrate the birthday of Mother Mary.
At the end of the Mass, there was a lucky draw of 8 prizes for children holding 151 lucky coupons and who brought flowers for nine days of Novena. Eight children walked away with the prizes. YCS unit also held a lucky dip – there were 1st, 2nd and 3rd Prizes of 30 kg, 20kg and 10kg mura rice respectively and five consolation prizes.
Blessed new corn was distributed to the families. Before going home, the faithful were requested to take a sugarcane each. The excitement of fetching the sugarcane by the people was a beauty of this festivity.

kemmanuKemmannu 8 Sep: September 8 is being celebrated the world over, as the birth anniversary of Mother Mary. Konkani Catholic Christian brethren. celebrating this in the name of 'Monti Fest' on Monday September 8. World over, this day is celebrated as the feast of Immaculate Conception. The Konkani Christians, apart from paying obeisance to Virgin Mary, also celebrate the festival of the new corn today.
The tradition of celebrating the day of the nativity feast, is believed to have been started in the eighth century AD. On this day, people celebrate the nativity of the Mother that brought joy to the world. The Immaculate Conception was not an accident, it was well prepared by God. This is one of the occasions in which the devotees re-assert their unwavering confidence in the Lord, supported by persevering gprayers. They know, that by remembering the kindness of the divine powers, they can invoke divine mercy and get constant flow of the God's blessings.



 St. Theres's Church Kemmannu celebrated the feast of Nativity of Mother Mary with great religious way and being emotionally aroused.
Blessings of new rice harvest at convent, & the procession to the church along with children offering their flowers to Mother Mary was so colourful that the street from St Carmel convent to church reflected beautiful exotic carpet of spring flowers.
The church wore a colourful look and every child and even few adults joined in offering flowers to Mother Mary.

Kemmannu, September 5: The 7th Day Novena Prayers in preparation for our Mother Mary’s Feast on September 8th (Monthi Fest) was held this morning as usual with the mass and then offering of flowers to our Mother.
As the day of the feast is coming close more and more kids are joining the flower offering to our Mother.
Adults are also participating by bringing their kids and helping them to arrange these flowers trays.
After each days Novena prayers sweets were distributed to the children which was sponsored by the parishioners.
