Kundapur: Catholic Sabha, Kundapur Varado honours Christian Representatives elected recently in local body election - 10/27/2007

Kundapur, Oct 26: Antony D’Souza, president of Sastan Kodi-Kanyana gram panchayat, Philomina Pereira, vice-president of Nada gram panchayat and Gretta Lewis, member of Saligram town panchayat were honoured by Fr Antony Lobo, parish priest and dean of Kundapur deanery recently.

A felicitation programme was organized by the Catholic Sabha, Kundapur deanery here recently.

Dr Sony D’Coasta, president, Catholic Sabha welcomed the gathering. Robert Olivera introduced the honored guests to the gathering.

Johnson D’Almeada, ex-president, Catholic Sabha Kundapur denary and Joseph D’Silva, zonal president, Udupi Catholic Sabha were the chief guest present on the dais.

Gretta Lewis spoke on behalf of the honored guests. Shanthi D’Silva, secretary, Catholic Sabha proposed the vote of thanks. Ancilla Carvallo compered the programme.


Udupi: Agriculturist-entrepreneur Palli Srinivas Hegde (73) Passes away - 10/27/2007

Udupi, Oct 27: Palli Srinivas Hegde (73), a progressive agriculturist, bus transport operator, Yakshagana patron and philanthropist of Hiriadka near here, passed away of cardiac arrest in Manipal hospital on October 26.

Born of Balkattubeedu Chandrashekhar Hegde and Palli Pajakodange Lakshani Hegde, he made an entry into agriculture and business fields in 1960. He started the first bus service "West Coast" between Udupi and Manipal in 1966 and founded 'Rajaram Motors' in 1969.

Hegde was a far-sighted agriculturist and grew vanilla, rambutan, mangosteen, clove and other exotic plants, besides the traditional betelnut, coconut and pepper in his model 'Khajane' agricultural farm located at Khajane near Shivapura, which has been rated the best farm in the whole state. It is believed to be the largest farm in the country growing fruits of foreign origin.

Hegde held various agriculture-related posts as trustee of vanilla development organization, treasurer of Syndicate Agricultural and Rural Development Foundation and others.

He was also convener of the Saligrama Yakshagana troupe and contributed to several public causes like temple and 'garodi' renovation, school betterment, marriage of girls from poor families and medical treatment of financially needy persons with serious ailments.

Besides many other awards, in 2005, Hegde had received the best agriculturist awards at the hands of former chief election commissioner T N Seshan.

He is survived by two entrepreneur-sons Nataraj and Rajaram Hegde and a daughter.

Final rites:

Hegde's mortal remains will be placed at his residence at Hiriadka for public homage between 10-00 am and 1 pm on Saturday, October 27, and will be cremated later in 'Khajane' farm near Perdoor at 2-30 pm.

Udupi: Prizes distributed by the Forest Department to the winners in Public Awareness Competitions - 10/20/2007

Kundapur, Oct 19: The forest department of Kundapur region recently organized various competitions at district-level as a part of its campaign for public awareness in the auditorium of Shamili, Udupi.

The Flora and Fauna club of Kundapur won the first prize in the overall estimate of the performances in various competitions.

The expert photographer Budaya Kumar Shetty, director Bailoor educational trust and the member of Flora and Fauna club of Kundapur won the first prize in the photographic competition of Kandla Forest, its diversities and significance.

The club also won the prize in the drawing of banner competition for highlighting the danger faced and the protection needed by the Kandla Forest.

 Dr Subhoda Kumar is the president of Kundapur Flora and Fauna club.


Shirur: JCI Shirur Holds Programme on Welfare Activities - 10/20/2007

Kundapur, Oct 19: Under the auspices of JCI of Shirur, a week-long programme on welfare activities was held recently.

Inaugurating the programme, T Babu, branch manager, Vijaya Bank, Byndoor opined that such welfare activities of the JCI should reach and benefit the common people of the neighbouring villages.

Sadananda Navada, ex-president Jaycee region 15, was the chief guest on the occasion.

He wished the function every success. Nagappa Poojary, member, gram panchayat, Gayathri Ganapathy Mestha, president, Ganesh Mithra Mandaly and Pushpa Raj Shetty, who presided over the programme, were present on the dais.
