Udupi: Partial Solar Eclipse Tomorrow - Eclipse to Peak at 6.20 am - 7/21/2009
daijiworldUdupi, Jul 21: The greatest solar eclipse of the 21st century will occur in the early morning on Wednesday July 22. The sun will be eclipsed before the sunrise and for this part of the country, it will be a partial eclipse. However, total solar eclipse will be visible from Varanasi, Kolkata, Haridwar, Patna, Gaya and some other regions in north India.
The sunrise in this part of the coast on Wednesday will be at 6.14 am and the sun will get eclipsed at 5.30 am. The eclipse is set to end at 7.16 am. The eclipsed portion of the sun will be visible in a silhouetted form (like a bangle). 6.20 am will be the time when the eclipse will be at its peak.
In Bangalore, the eclipsed sun will rise at 6.03 am and the eclipse will end at 7.17 am. In Mumbai, the sun will rise at 6.12 am. The eclipse will begin there at 5.28 am and will end at 7.19 am.
Arrangements have been made at the terrace of Poornaprajna Institute of Management by Udupi Poornaprajna Amateur Astronomers Association. About 50 eyeglasses to be worn at the time of viewing the sun have been arranged, said A P Bhat, convener of the Association.
The eclipse, which will not be visible in this form for the next 50 years, should never be viewed either with naked eyes or as a reflection in plain or coloured water. People can however, watch the eclipse in water mixed with cow dung or as reflected from a wall, Dr Bhat said.
Wednesday happens to be Ati Amavasya. Udyavar SDM Ayurveda College medical superintendent Dr Y N Shetty has opined that those who want to consume the 'Ati Maddu', a concoction made by extracting the juice from the bark of a tree in water as per custom and mixing it with pepper powder, may do so after taking bath subsequent to the conclusion of the eclipse. At Sri Krishna Mutt too, the juice made as above, will be distributed after the eclipse ends.

Udupi: Heavy Rain Causes Floods, Traffic Snarls along NH 17 near Brahmavar - 7/16/2009
daijiworldUdupi, Jul 16: The incessant rains and heavy winds that swept through the taluk on Wednesday night caused floods in Uppoor, Baikady, Nilavar, Barkoor and Mabukula in the district, which lie close to Arabian Sea. The floods of Swarna River and Sita River, has inundated the paddy fields, plantations besides entering the houses along its path. The electricity supply and communication network across the district got snapped owing to break down of transmission grids and trouble shooting in relay towers, since Wednesday July 16 early morning.
The age-old trees located on Mangalore – Mumbai national highway 17 at Uppoor, near here were uprooted on Wednesday morning, causing traffic bottlenecks all along the highway. Several heavy vehicles including passenger buses broke down en-route Kundapur and Katpady.
The regular commuters on inter-city buses had to stay back at home, since the cloudy weather prevailed on Thursday morning. The shops were deserted in city as a few people ventured out of their homes.
The locals say that it has been years now that the 'Punarvasu' rain (which usually starts at the end of June) has been so torrential. In the last 4-5 years, the story has been that it used to rain heavily during June and the first half of July used to quite dry. But this year, the situation has been vice-versa. It was quite humid and dry throughout the month of June. But the rains that started with the ending of 'Adre' and commencement of 'Punarvasu' have not shown any signs of relief so far. It has been the combine deadly factor of heavy rains and speeding gales which have been the ‘destructor-in-chief’ this time around. If some of the elders could remember, it was the same 'Punarvasu' rains that had caused the '1974 floods', which has been considered as one of the most devastating floods in undivided district of Dakshina Kannada after the deluge of 1923.
Now that 'Punarvasu' rain is making way to 'Pushya', people are of the belief that there will be some relief from torrential downpour.
