Eye Opener: Hemmadi(Jannadi) Bridge is in poor condition. - 8/13/2007

Hemmadi: The famous age old Hemmadi(Jannadi) Bridge on National Highway 17 is in poor condition. The main reason for this condition is improper maintenance and movement of several overloaded trucks daily.  Recently the bridge got the quoting of the latest technology called Matrix. Now the quoting is lost because of the heavy rains. The concerned authorities should look into this matter and take the necessary steps to take care of the bridge and avoid from major accidents.

Kundapur: Cultural Association 'Prakriti' Inaugurated at Beary's PU College, Kodi - 8/11/2007

Kundapur, Aug 12:  Presiding over the function held to mark the inauguration of the cultural association 'Prakriti’ in Beary’s Pre-University College, Kodi Hajji Master Mohammed, president of Beary’s educational institute spoke about the significance of cultural activities in the college.


Dr G H Prabhakar Shetty, principal and administrative director, addressed the students and reminded them that active participation in all the cultural programs of the college would stand them in good stead in future life.

Association's assistant convener Sandeep Kumar Shetty gave an introductory speech, throwing light on the salient features and objects of the association.

Earlier another assistant convener Dr Raghavendra Rao welcomed the gathering. Convener Suja D’Souza gave the vote of thanks.


Barkur: Brahmavara Zone level Yoga Championship Competitions at Barkur - 8/10/2007

Barkur: Primary and High School Level Zonal Yoga Championship Competitions of Brahmavar Zone were held at Mary knoll High School Barkur on 9th August organized jointly by the school and government educational  department.

B.N. Shankar Poojari, President of the Udupi Jilla Panchayath presided over the inaugural function and Rev.Fr.Remigeous Aranha was the chief guest. P. Raju Poojari, Zonal Physical Education Coordinator, M.S. Nagaraja Rao, Resource Person in Yoga for the state, Ashok Poojari, District Yoga Coordinator, Sr.Lenny Crasta, Mother Superior of IHM Convent and the Correspondent of the Mary knoll High School, Sr. Asha Helen Pereira, Head Mistress of MHS, Umesh Shenoy, Manager , Syndicate Bank , Barkur were present on the stage.

Physical Education teacher, Herald Gonsalves welcomed officials , guests and the participants  and the teachers from the various schools from the zone. Fr. Aranha, Shankar Poojari and M.S. Nagaraja Rao jointly inaugurated the championship competitions by lighting the lamp. Teacher Swarnalatha conducted the proceedings and proposed vote of thanks.

The competitions were held in various rounds for boys and girls under the age of 14 and under the age of 17 years.

Jilla Panchayath School Santhekatte, Kallianpur bagged the group championship for girls and boys under 14 years age and under 17 years age group championship was claimed by Sharada High School Cherkadi.

Satheesh Amin, President, Mogaveera Youth Association and Akthar Ahmed, President Rotaract Club were present at the valedictory function held in the evening and distributed the individual prizes and the group shields.

Breakfast, lunch and evening snacks were arranged for all the participants and teachers.  Speaking to barkuronline.com, P. Raju Poojari, Zonal Physical Education Coordinator expressed his satisfaction for the professionalism displayed by the Mary knoll High School staff in organizing such and event at Barkur and appreciated  PE teacher Harry Gonsalves and School Staff Rudolf D’Souza  for their initiative and efforts in making the event a very big success. He thanked HM Sr. Asha Helen for taking up the challenge within few months after taking the charge at the school.


Kallianpur:"Basni" a Konkani musical Programme hedl at Kallianpur to celebrate the Konkani Recognition day - 8/8/2007

Kallianpur, Aug 8: "Basni" a Konkani musical Programme was held on 6th Aug in the Silver Jubilee Hall of the Milagres College. This programme was organized by Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy in association with Konkani Sangatan Udupi District and Milagres College, Kallianpur. Eric ozario the President of the Karnataka Konkany Sahitya Academy and Gurkar of "Mand Sobann" along with his team gave the musical Programme.


This included the Poems of Ershad Rahim, B.V Baliga and Cha.Fra , Mando, Dekni, Vovio and verse and traditional Konkani songs.


 Dr Gerald Pinto the President of Konkani Sangatan welcomed the gathering. Fr Fred Macarena's blessed the programme Fr Marcel Saldanha the correspondent of Milagres Institutions was present during the programme.


Ths programme was organised to celebrate recognition of Konkani language by Indian Constitution in 1992 on 20th August.


Kundpaur: Heavy rains.....Flood Situation Remains Still around Kundapur - 8/8/2007

Kundapur, Aug 8: The situation is still grim in the taluk following heavy rains in the last 3 days.  Though flood situation is slightly improved in Navunda, Maravante, Nada and other areas, people are still caught indoors owing to incessant rains.


Landslides, house collapses owing to heavy rains and stormy weather have created panic in the minds of people who are held up within four walls for the last 3 days.  It has been raining cats and dogs in the entire taluk and people say weather has not been so hostile in the recent past.


Almost all the rivers of the taluk are flowing above the danger level which has caused uncertainty in the minds of the people.  The body of the Saku (22), daughter of Babu Shetty of Koni who had been washed away in the flood waters has not yet been found. Coconut gardens have been at the receiving end in Maravante region. A number of coconut trees have been uprooted by sweeping winds.  Along with that a number of houses have either been completely collapsed or partially damaged in the Gangolli region.


In Byndoor region a road to Navunda via Badakere-Konki which had been constructed under Pradhanmantri Gram Sadak Yojna is completely damaged owign to floods and is washed away.  This is resulted in residents of Konki, Badakere, Chikkalli, Kalihitlu etc being isolated and having no contact with the main land.  More than 50 houses of fishermen of Konki areas are inundated owing to floods in Sauparnika river.  People of the area have been shifted to safer place.
