Gangolli: 'Chaitra Chiguru' Camp for children held - 6/3/2009

Gangolli, Jun 3: A camp meant for bringing about innovations in the sphere of learning, was recently held by the department of public instruction at Gangolli.

Raju Devadiga, Kundapur taluk panchayat president, inaugurated the camp. Gangolli panchayat president Surekha Kanoji spoke on the occasion. Y S Haragi, assistant education officer, Fr Alphonso D'Lima, correpondent of St Joseph Higher Primary School, Prafulla, Umesh, Stella Martis, C Archana, head mistress of the local high school and school teacher C Bibiana participated among others.

Umesh, resource person, welcomed the gathering. Zita Rebello proposed vote of thanks. Anne Crasta and Felcy D'Silva participated as resource persons.


Malpe: Sri Rama Sene holds Swimming competition at Malpe - 5/25/2009

Udupi May 24, 2009: The Udupi district unit of Sri Rama Sene organised a swimming competition here on Sunday.

The event was flagged off by Lakshmivara Tirtha Swamiji of Shiroor Math. There were nine participants who took part in the swimming from the Malpe beach to the St Mary’s island. Volunteers from the fishermen community escorted the participants in motor boats as they swam to the shore.

Five winners namely Gopal Kharvi; Gopalkrishna Adiga; Sunny Manipal; Ramakanth Bhat; and Jagadish Shettar were given prizes. Mr Arvind, General Manager of Aircel was also present on the occasion.


Udupi: Flower show a damp squib - 5/25/2009

UDUPI, May 24, 2009: The flower and vegetable show organized by the Udupi district horticulture department (Zilla Panchayat) turned out to be a damp squib.

 
Despite very good show put up by the department and arrangements made by the district administration only a handful of people visited the show. The department has the exact number of visitors during the two days (Saturday and Sunday) and its report says that only 230 people visited on both days.
 
The Home minister Dr. V.S. Acharya was supposed to inaugurate the show on Saturday but he did not turn out. The Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police also did not turn up for the inaugural ceremony, however Raju Poojary the Zilla Panchayat president arrived on time and attended the programme promptly.

The show was held at Doddanna Gudde about 3 kilometers from the centre of udupi city. The District administration had and the information department had arranged for the special bus service three times during the day and twice in the evening and return but the people of Udupi did not show any interest in attending the show.
 


According to the officials of the horticulture department the show was a success considering the number of entries. It had attracted over 500 entries from all over the district and the horticulture department itself had arranged for over 1000 varieties of flowers, vegetables, legumes, fruits and plants from its own nurseries. But since this was the first time that the Udupi district was organizing the show the publicity was not up to the mark. 


Mangalore: Producer Frank Fernandes, Thottam's Konkani Movie 'Kazar' to Hit Screens on Sep 9 - 5/23/2009

Mangalore, May 22:  "Shooting for the Konkani movie, 'Kazar' is in progress and the movie is set to be released on September 9, 2009," informed Frank Fernandes, producer of the film. The film is being directed by Richard Castelino, who also has shouldered the responsibility of writing the script and dialogues. Sudhakar Bannanje is the operative director of the movie, while Wilfy Rebimbus and Ragdev have provided music.  Background music is being taken care of by Bharati Das, lyrics are by Wilfy Rebimbus and the late Mick Max, with Elyar Takkode and Arthur Pereira working behind the camera. The star cast includes Larry Fernandes, Harshika Punacha, Mitesh and Savio Monteiro in the lead roles, supported by many other artistes.

At the press conference held on the evening of Thursday May 21 at Abhiman Residency in the city, Fernandes said, the Konkani movie he has been producing, centres around the noble values of the system of marriage. According to a belief prevalent among the Roman Catholics, marriage is the best system in the world and that the bond between the couple which lives together has food and offers prayer together, lasts long.

Sudhakar Bannanje welcomed and delivered introductory address. Fr Santosh Kamat, director Richard Castelino, producer Frank Fernandes, Walter Nandalike of Daijiworld.com, Rohidas Kadri, Ramachander Bykampady and Jagadish Adhikari were present.

While wishing every success to the venture, BJP leader Jagadish Adhikari said that Richard is not making the movie with an eye on making money, but because of the love and affection he has for the regional language, which also is his mother tongue. In view of this, he deserves to be appreciated and needs to be wholeheartedly supported, he added. Ramachander Bykampady, Rohidas Kadri and Frank Fernandes too spoke on the occasion.

Sundar Hegde presented the programme. Rony Crasta proposed vote of thanks.


Udupi: Sandalwood Stars Descend at ‘Kuhoo Kuhoo’ Finale - 5/21/2009

Udupi, May 21: “Singing is a God-given gift and rural talents need the support of music enthusiasts to explore their talents”, said Sri Laxmivarateerta Swami of Shiroor Mutt.
 


Swami Laxmivarateerta was gracing the inaugural function at the finals of the ‘Kuhoo Kuhoo Udupi Kogile’ a district-level Kannada and Hindi karaoke singing competition held at Sri Vidyaniketan Group of Education Institutions, Kaup, near here recently.
 
South India’s eminent singers L R Eshwari and B K Sumitra, Sandalwood actors Srinagar Kinnit, Muni, Karibasavayya, Mahendra, child artiste and singer Anirudd, ‘Sugam Sangeet’ musician Jyoti Raviprakash, drummer Deva, producer Sandal Sandeep, Rajesh Bhat Mangalore, and popular serial actor Aparna were some of the distinguished guests present o n the occasion.

Sri Vidyaniketan Group of Education Institutions correspondent K P Acharya, presided over the programme which was held for the first time in the district with the generous support of Bellary entrepreneur Suresh P Shetty Kalattoor Gurme.
 
Kaup MLA Lalaji R Mendon, entrepreneur Suresh Shetty Bellary, JD (S) district president Deviprasad Shetty, social worker Leeladar Shetty, Kutyar gram panchayat president Nityanand Shetty, and Kaup Jaycees president Arun Shetty Padoor, were the chief guests on the occasion.
