Padukone: 800th Birthday of Holland’s Queen St. Elizabeth Celebrated - 12/7/2008

Padukone, Dec 7: The 800th birthday celebrations of Queen Elizabeth of Holland, the founder of the Tertiary Association, were held on a grand scale along with the permanent acceptance of membership of Padukone, near here. 

The chief priest, Fr Sudeep Gonsalves, graced the occasion. Fr Dominic Vegas, performed the traditional rituals on the occasion. Fr Dolphy Menezes, gave the sermon to the August congregation. Fr Philip Neri of Padukone Church, presided over the function.  Fr Alfonso D’Lima of Gangalli Church, was the chief guest.

Rita Crasta, president of the diocese, welcomed the gathering. Diana Crasta gave the vote of thanks. At the end of the celebration, various entertainment programmes and a screening of the film ‘Parjalik Neyketra’, was held.


Kundapur: Renovated Ferry Road Garden Inaugurated - 12/6/2008

Kundapur, Dec 6: The old Ferry Road Garden was recently renovated by the town municipality at a cost of Rs 17.32 lac under the ADB project.

It was recently inaugurated by municipal chairman K Mohandas Shenoy. Nagaraj Kanchan, vice-president, Satish Shetty, president, standing committee, Haroon Saheb, former chairman and members Rajesh, Kaveri, Suchitra, Umesh, Pushpa Shet, Vijaya Poojary, and the municipal staff were present on the occasion.

 Kollur, Dec 6: We Indians must have a sense of national belongness. To create this, we need an organized effort to meet leadership qualities, teach us discipline, patience, and perseverance, and to instill in us the need for service before self, said Uppunda Chandrashekhara Holla, former president, Udupi District Karnataka Sahitya Parishad.

He was speaking at the inaugural of the seminar organized under the joint auspices of the department of public instruction, Udupi district, and Bharath Seva Dal, at Kollur, near here. He said that it was essential to create national awareness among the youth of the country.

Ramakrishna Adiga, manager, Sri Mookambika Temple, lit the lamp and gave the welcome speech. Among those present were Raju Poojary, inspector of education, Kundapur range, Mahesh S Pattar, officer, Udupi District Bharath Seva Dal, and B Manjunath Sheregar, state inspector, Bharath Seva Dal. Rajeev Shetty, organizer, Kundapur range, monitored the programme while Nityananda proposed the vote of thanks.


Sasthan: ICYM Sastan Parish Unit Organizes Youth Convention - 12/2/2008

Udupi, Dec 2: Youth convention of Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) of St Anthony's church, Sastan and dedication of permanent sound systems to parish auditorium was held on Sunday November 30 at parish auditorium, here.

St Anthony's church parish priest Fr Vincent Martis dedicated the sound systems donated by ICYM to St Anthony's parish and installed in the late John Furtado Memorial church auditorium.  

Fr Vincent Martis urged the youth to take leadership in the society as they are its future.  

Parish council vice-president Sylvester D’Souza, who was the chief guest of the occasion, said that youth need adequate guidance in the society in the modern age.  Hence, youth need to act upon in this regard, he urged.

District ICYM vice-president Lancy Martis Moodubelle and speaker Zina Mary Lewis were also present on the dais.  Resource persons Kota Narendra Kumar, Wilson D'Souza Shirva and Sr Meena Kanajar enlightened the youth on 'Leadership in Group', 'Friendship and Love' and 'Entertainment - A Way to Leadership' respectively. 

ICYM parish unit felicitated Jesus Mary convent superior Sr Rosario Pimenta for being appointed as provincial superior of Gujarat province, on the same occasion.

ICYM parish unit president Chester D'Souza welcomed the gathering while vice-president Joel Lewis proposed vote of thanks.  Secretary Jonita Lewis compered the programme.  Convener Michael Rodrigues delivered the keynote address.


Kundapur: Seminar held on - 11/24/2008

Kundapur, Nov 24: A seminar held recently focused on the health and sanitation problems encountered by residents of the taluk. N S Prasanna Kumar of the Udupi District Panchayath Health Standing Committee, was one of the speakers who voiced concern over the issue.

He said that more than 10,000 houses in the taluk lacked toilets and shortage of pure drinking water was the main reason for the spread of several diseases. Infantile mortality is another problem which has not been solved at all, he said. 

Making the introductory speech, Dr Rama Rao, taluk health officer, said that the seminar was being conducted with the aim of paying special care to the backward regions of the country. Kavitha of Bangalore, representing the Karnataka sanitation institute, informed the gathering that the best villages selected will be given prizes for complete sanitation, so that people are made aware of the urgent need for keeping their villages neat and clean. 

Incidentally, some 47 villages were selected this time for their good performance. Dr Pavan Kumar, professor, Kasturba Hospital Manipal, M R Nayak, district health officer, Dr Roshani, and Dr Antony, also spoke on the occasion. The joint director of PIB, Bangalore, was present on the podium. Nanjunda Swami, field officer, welcomed the audience.
