Udupi: World Anti-Child Labour Day observed - 6/13/2008
UdayavaniUdupi, June 14: Commissioner of Udupi City Municipal Council R N Shanbhag said on Thursday that child labour was a challenge for developing nations.
He was speaking at the “World Anti-Child Labour Day”, organised by the district administration and the Zilla Balakarmika Yojana Sangha, here. Shanbhag said that it was essential for these countries to eradicate child labour and ensure that children below 14 years of age are provide education.
Education was essential not only because it provided knowledge but also boosted their employment prospects, later.
“If the children are made to work when they should be learning, their earning capacity will be reduced and ultimately this will affect the country in the long run,” he said. V R Kumar welcomed the gathering. Admar Sripati Acharya compered the programme.
Professor at Vaikunta Baliga College of Law K Arvinda Bhat spoke on Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act 1986.

Udupi: Guidance for studies abroad - 6/13/2008
UdayavaniUdupi , June 14: Manipal Overseas Careers (MOC) an international education and carrer prospects organisation, will start functioning at Manipal on June 21 with the support of Bharathiya Vikas Trust, Manipal.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, Jairaj Shetty, founder of Plantneeds Private Limited, Australia, said that the MOC would give free guidance to persons who are interested to study or work in Australia and other foreign countries. It will help the candidates to get admissions in higher education institutions in higher education institutions in foreign countries and will give guidance to the candidates during their preparations for English tests like LELTS and TOFEL.
The organisation also facilitates study and work visa for Australia, New Zealand and other countries, he said. Founder of MOC Sapna J Shetty, senior manager for education and careers Aroor Manjunath Rao and others were present.

Udupi: Acharya does not deserve the post - 6/13/2008
UdayavaniUdupi , June 14: Nagarjuna Virodhi Horata Samithi on Friday strongly condemned Home Minister V S Acharyas recent observations supporting coal based Nagarjuna thermal power plant at Nandikur and Yellur villages and demanded the immediate cessation of the ESCRO project.
Speaking to media persons here on Thursday, Samithi President Vijay Kumar Hegde alleged that the Home Minister is following a devious path by supporting Nagarjuna project, the same project which he had strongly resisted previously.
Hegde demanded the Home Minister to accept the moral responsibility for the recent Haveri shootout and resign the post. Acharya does not deserve any rights according to democratic principles since he has not been nominated by the people, he added.
Reacting to the Acharya’s announcement that the State should be developed based on the model of development projects in China, Hegde said that India is not a Communist country where the voices against the government are curbed with guns.

Udupi: Rain damages 47 houses in Udupi taluk; Rs. 6-lakh loss - 6/13/2008
The HinduUdupi: As many as 47 houses were damaged owing to high winds accompanied with rain in Udupi taluk on Friday.
The damage is estimated at Rs. 6 lakh.
According to the Udupi taluk office, 27 houses were damaged at Nadsal in Padubidri village.
The damage to these houses has been estimated at Rs. 5 lakh. Another 15 houses were damaged in Palimar village and the loss is estimated at Rs. 35,000.
In Hejmady village, two houses were damaged and the tiled roofs of many houses were blown away. In Padubidri, one power transformer was damaged. The damage caused to the house of Sankhi Markalti at Udyavar village is estimated at Rs. 40,000.
The houses of Shantha Anilkumar at Shivally and of Shekhar Shetty at Tenka village suffered damages, estimated at Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 15,000, respectively. Raifall

Udupi: Congress demands Yeddyurappa’s resignation - 6/13/2008
The HinduUdupi: Former municipal councillor and Congress leader B. Janardhan Bhandarkar said on Friday that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was responsible for the recent death of a farmer in the police firing in Haveri.
He was speaking at a meeting, organised by the Udupi Block Congress Committee to protest against the police firing in Haveri, here.
Mr. Bhandarkar said that a relief of Rs. 10 lakh should be given to the farmer’s family. Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa should resign owning moral responsibility for the death of the farmer and a judicial probe should be ordered into the police firing. The probe should reveal who fired the bullets and who gave orders for firing, he said.
While the police was firing at innocent farmers in Haveri, Home Minister V.S. Acharya was busy getting felicitated in Mangalore. Hence he should also resign, Mr. Bhandarkar said and condemned the Bharatiya Janata Party Government in the State for dilly-dallying over reducing the sales tax on petroleum products.

Udupi: Udupi MLA’s wife goes missing; police launch search - 6/13/2008
The HinduKunjargiri (Udupi District): Padmapriya Bhat, wife of Udupi MLA K. Raghupati Bhat, has been missing since Wednesday.
Ms. Bhat is said to have taken her car from her husband’s house in Udupi to go to her mother’s place at Karnad near Mulki on Wednesday. However, her car was found abandoned below the Kunjargiri Hill in Kunjagiri village in the Shirva police station limits on Friday.
Some broken bangles were seen near the driver’s seat of the car. Some bloodstains were also seen. Soon after getting information, the police swung into action and blocked the entry and exit points of the area. A sniffer dog was also pressed into service at the spot. The police were carrying on their search for Ms. Bhat in the surrounding forest areas. Some divers were also pressed into service in two small ponds near the spot. However, they found no clues to the case.
Speaking to presspersons here, Inspector General of Police (Western Range) A.M. Prasad said that as soon as he got the message of the incident, he sent a team of police personnel to the area to check. “She drove the car herself to the (Sri Durga Devi) temple (at Kunjargiri) two days ago. The Shirva police were informed about the car on Friday, that is how we came to know about the incident. We are carrying on investigation. It would be too premature for me to say anything now,” Mr. Prasad said.
Deputy Superintendent of Police M.B. Nagaraju told The Hindu that a mobile telephone, some broken bangles, some tablets, a bag containing about Rs. 10,000 in cash and bloodstains were found in the car. A team of Anti-Naxalite Force also took part in the search.
Later, Mr. Raghupati Bhat visited the spot along with former MLA Sunil Kumar. Home Minister V.S. Acharya also visited the spot.
Superintendent of Police of Anti-Naxalite Force (ANF) Subash Gudimani and Superintendent of Police of Dakshina Kannada Satish Kumar were present.

Udupi: Officials told to create awareness on chikungunya and malaria - 6/11/2008
The HinduUdupi: The president of the Udupi Zilla Panchayat Raju Poojary has directed the officials of the Health Department to take immediate steps to create awareness about chikungunya and malaria.
Presiding over the monthly Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) meeting here on Wednesday, Mr. Poojary said the Health Department should hold camps and inform people on the measures that they could take.
The Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, Prasanna Kumar, said that about 327 malaria cases had been reported in Udupi city. Pamphlets with information about malaria and chikungunya should be distributed in villages with the help of people working in anganwadis and primary health centres, he said.
Chairman of the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Industry Janardhan Tonse said that though five works to prevent sea erosion had been sanctioned by the Department of Ports and Fisheries at Kemmannu-Hoode village, there had been no progress in the last three years. Three houses in the village were in danger of being affected by sea erosion, he said. Mr. Poojary directed the officials to expedite the works.

Udupi: Man falls off wall, dies - 6/11/2008
The HinduUdupi: Three persons were killed in as many incidents in Udupi district on Tuesday. According to the Udupi town police, Basavaraj (32), was killed when he fell off a compound wall which he was repairing at Brahmagiri.
Ratna (23), was killed when she fell into an open well at Marvanthe village.
A farmer, Narayan Kundar (65), was killed when he slipped and fell into a pond at Mannur village.

Udupi: Seminar on Tulu theatre - 6/11/2008
The HinduUdupi: The Nama Tuluver Kala Sanghatane would be holding a seminar on Tulu theatre to celebrate 100 performances of the Tulu drama “Philipatti Gadas” here on June 15.
Speaking to presspersons here on Wednesday, president of the sanghatane Sukumar Mohan said writer Amrit Someshwar will inaugurate the seminar. Writer N. Damodar Shetty will preside over the inaugural function and Muddu Moodubelle will present a paper on “Tulu theatre — past and present.”
In the evening session, a discussion on D.K. Chowta’s contribution to Tulu theatre would be held.

Kollur: Fund raising abroad condemned - 6/11/2008
UdayavaniUdupi, June 11: Former managing trustee of Kollur Sri Mookambika temple Appanna Hegde has condemned the present Managing Trustee's action of raising funds in the name of Kollur Mookambika abroad.
Speaking to the media here on Monday Appanna Hegde said that a team led by temple Managing trustee of Krishnaprasad Adyanthaya had held a Chandika Homa in Srikrishna temple of Roowi in Oman recently, to raise funds for the temple. He said that there is no precedent of temple raising funds abroad, by keeping the photo of goddess Mookambika. "The act will definitely demean the importance of Srikshethra Kollur in the eye of devotees," he said.
Hegde said that one of the 'archaks' of Kollur Raveendra Bhat and a few priests from Kerala had accompanied Adyanthaya in the fund raising programme. He alleged that no proper receipts had been issued to the donors.
Moreover, last year, an attempt was made to raise funds in the name of goddess by forming a separate trust and by including some of the dignitaries as its trustees.
Hegde urged the Chief Minister, Minister for religious Endowment, Sri Raghaveshwara Bharathi Swamiji of Sri Ramachandra Mutt, Hosanagar, Commissioner of Religious Endowment and Deputy Commissioner to intervene and inquire into the misdeeds of the temple management, "If they fail to take necessary action, we will agitate in front of the temple demanding the suspension of the temple management," Hegde said.
