Udupi: Pejavar seer refutes allegations - 12/3/2007
Udayavani
Udupi, December 3: Pejavar Mutt pontiff Vishwesha Theertha Swamiji in a press release has denied the allegation made by Putthige Mutt pontiff Sugunendra Theertha Swamiji that he (Pejavar seer) was involved in politics.
The full text of the Pejavar Swamiji’s statement: “Some have objected that I was involved in politics. Great sanths like Vidyaranya, Vyasaraja, Sathyabhoda and others had given their political advices. That is the case, will it be against Shastras or tradition to give occasional advice to political parties? I have not entered into any party politics, but kept good relations with all political parties and have been giving valuable advices. I have pointed out the wrongs to the BJP, Congress and other parties. Even during Emergency, I had written a letter in strong words to Indira Gandhi. But all of them have dealt with me intimately.”
“Neither pro-Hindu, nor socialistic nor secular forces should be divided. If they are divided, the message will not reach the people and there will not be a clear mandate. There will not be a stable government. So, if I, as a head of Mutt, give advice impartially to political parties will that amount to politics? Moreover, if I say that pro-Hindu forces should not be divided will that be wrong? I make it clear that I have been acting impartially without identifying myself with any political party.”

Udupi: Families hard hit by Nagarjuna Power Corporation Limited - 12/2/2007
The Hindu
Site of sorrow: Members of the families who refuse to vacate their land at the NPCL site at Yellur in Udupi district.
Udupi: People living in the Nagarjuna Project site here have only tales of woe to narrate about the treatment meted out by Nagarjuna Power Corporation Ltd (NPCL). The project site for the 1,015 MW coal-based Nagarjuna Power Project is located at Yellur, about 25 km from Udupi.
Nine families (according to the Nandikur Janajagriti Samiti; the NPCL says only four families stay there), have refused to move out of the project site. They live in an area fenced with barbed wire and is guarded round-the-clock. Lakshmi Multi, who is a member of one such family, said, “We have one and a half acres of land. Now the company plans to level our field. Our land produced 64 “murras” of rice a year, which was enough for our family of 14 members. We have told the company that we cannot give up our land. If we do, what will we eat?” Lakshmi’s father Somayya Mulya, said, “We have to sign the register kept by the company, to enter and exit the site. .” Gopi Pujarti, a widow, who owns two acres land said that she carries a sickle with her to protect herself and her land. She said, “I have grown 100 coconut palms on my land and I survive on its returns. MP Manorama Madhwaraj, who was present at the site, said, “The NPCL is troubling the people. It has dug the land around their homes. How will these people walk around at night? The company has restricted their movements.”

Udupi: Paryaya crisis facing Ashta Maths deepens - 11/30/2007
UdayavaniUdupi, November 30: The crisis facing the “Ashta Maths” (eight maths) on the issue of ascension of Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji of Puttige Math to the Paryaya Peetha on January 18 deepened here on Thursday with six maths, under the leadership of Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji of Pejawar Math, opposing it because the Puttige seer visited foreign countries, while Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji made it clear that he would ascend the “Paryaya Peetha”. The seer of Shiroor Math Lakshmivara Tirtha Swamiji said that he would support Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji.
Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji said the meeting of the seers of the Ashta Maths called on Wednesday night ended in unnecessary arguments, instead of discussing the main issue. He said that religious texts such as “Vishnu Purana” “Brihadaranyka Upanishad” and “Shankararamanujamadhwa Bhashya” were against visiting and staying in foreign countries –“Videsha Nisheda”.
“Matters of faith have their own importance. This matter would be solved by the Ashta Maths themselves and we will not approach the courts. We only request Sugunendra Tirtha not to ascend the Paryaya Peetha. He would be given all the respect as is given to a ‘peethadipati’”, the seer said.
He said Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji had agreed to take a disciple (“shishya” junior seer). But Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji felt that if this disciple got the “sanyasa deekshe” from Vidyasagar Tirtha under the “Dwandwa Math” system, it would create legal problems.
Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji said that he had tried several times in the last one year to solve the problem arising out of the “foreign visit” issue, but Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji had not responded to them. He told Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji that legal problems over the “shishya sweekara” could be sorted out. He said he fully appreciated the efforts of Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji in propagating the Dwaita philosophy in foreign countries.
Special prayers and “homas” would be conducted at the Sri Krishna Temple/Math from January 6 to 12 to resolve the issue of ascension to the Paryaya Peetha. He supported fully the demand of Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji about the need for a written constitution for Ashta Maths. Such a constitution should be prepared before January 18, 2008. Vidyadheesha Tirtha of Palimar Math and Vishwaprasanna Tirtha, junior seer of Pejawar Math were present.
Later speaking to presspersons, Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji said he was told at Wednesday night’s meeting of the seers that he had committed a sin by visiting foreign countries. But he (Sugunendra Tirtha) did not consider it a sin. He visited these countries only to propagate Dwaita philosophy. There was no definition of a “foreign country” in any religious text. “Vishwesha Tirtha had himself felicitated me when I returned from my foreign tour,” he said.
He had earlier thought of taking a “shishya” because he was growing old, and not because of the present controversy. As there was no consensus on the issue, he gave up the idea of taking a disciple. He said he was getting encouraging response from devotees for his next Paryaya. He would start his pre-Paryaya tour in Karnataka from Thursday.
Lakshmivara Tirtha Swamiji of Shiroor Math said he would support Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji on ascension issue. But if the seers of the other six maths boycott the Paryaya procession on January 18, 2008, he would participate in the Paryaya procession by walking in it instead of being carried in a traditional palanquin (as is the custom) as he did not want to disrespect his “gurus.”
“There is no point in having a single constitution for the Ashta Maths as each math has its own constitution. I have not signed the petition given by the Ashta Maths to Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji. I have no intention of visiting foreign countries for the present. I cannot say what will happen in the future,” he said.

Manipal: A museum for timeless beauties in Manipal - 11/30/2007
The HinduUDUPI: A stroll through the Museum of Folk Arts at the Heritage Village near here is like taking a walk down the centuries.
The collection of artefacts, paintings, and architectural structures that provide the visitor a view of life and culture of generations gone by is the handiwork of Vijaynath Shenoy, secretary of the Hasta Shilpa Trust. He is the brain behind the Museum.
The journey starts from the shrine of Nandikeshwara, a folk deity shrine (“Daivada Mane”). The architecture belongs to Tulu Nadu and such shrines are still seen in north Udupi.
“We designed the shrine consulting ancient texts. The wooden idols in the shrine were salvaged from water bodies,” Mr. Shenoy says.
Wooden idols, at least 1,000 years old, of Abaga Daraga, Kaantha Bare – Booda Bare, Veerabhadra, Jettiga, Babbraya and others have been placed on naturally grown laterite boulders. The next stop is a seven-cornered mud-floored “garodi” (prayer hall) of a style that is 10,000 years old. On the left begins the sections where metal work of the Canara region are displayed. Among these are an idol of 500-year-old “Maisandhaya” and a 300-year-old hollow cast idol of “Panjurli”.
The third section of the museum has items from the Bastar district of Madhya Pradesh. Masks of wood that are 200 years old, 140-year-old metal statues, and stone statues of “Sharadula” (the lion), 90 to 120 years old, are displayed here.
“We penetrated deep into the jungles to get these articles,” Mr. Shenoy says.
Agricultural equipment, items of daily use such as cane baskets prepared by tribal people, churning rods, and cash boxes used in ancient period occupy another section. \
This has costumes used in the Tenkuthittu and Badagathittu Yakshagana in earlier times, folk instruments, costumes used in Doddatta, Mudalpaya Yakshagana, and Somana Kunitha. The most interesting of the collections are of pre-historic idols that are 3,000 to 4,000 years old.
“We found these idols in the Aganashini River Valley in Uttara Kannada district,” he says.
His plan is to open Archival Museum of Raja Ravi Verma.
