Manipal: Flouridation of water, best measure to prevent tooth decay - 6/23/2007
The HinduManipal, June 23: Though, flouridation of community and school water is an effective measure to prevent tooth decay and other dental-related diseases, it was not implemented in India due to non-availability of ‘Flouride Map’.
Flouridation of water is a method of adding flouride to the drinking water, being supplied to the community to support dental health of the people. It is a good-old concept accepted by many of the Scandinavian countries and also by Chengrai Centre in Thailand, and Asian country. People in some of the countries go to the extent of consuming flouridated milk, salt, sweets and even flouride drops.
The Dental Council of India, though prepared a flouride map, it did not benefit much as it was not comprehensive.
Because it could not conduct the study of all water sources.” Ofcourse, the flouridation of water has proved useful in the prevention of ‘kavies’ (decay of tooth) and gum diseases. But it should be done very carefully as the excess consumption of flouride might lead to discolouration and its toxic effect might cause harm to both teeth and gum. It may even weaken the bones” , says Dean of Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Shobha Tandon.
Apart from flouried map, we also require to conduct a study of bio-avail-ability of flouride in the region. Because, the fish, tea leaves, turmeric included in the food habits of people of this region contains higher amount of flouride. But, we can not generalise as the consumption is also very low among some people. For the lock of flouride map we, at the dental department, will have to go case by case in treating the patients,” she added.
The indigenous tooth brushing methods using neem and mango leaves shall also be modified to include flouride, she suggested. Reader at the Department of Community Dentistry Dr Shashidar Achary, who conduced a poster presentation project on the subject ‘Flouridation of Community and School Water’, proposed the idea of supplying flouries water with the mid-day meal in the schools.” This suits the places where centralized water supply is in existance. Studnets shall be the target group. If flouride is tooth formation stage tooth will become extra strong,” Dr Shashidhar said.
Places like Tumkur, some parts of Shimoga district and parts of Shimoga district and parts of Easter Karnataka suffer from lower consumption of flouride, he added.
