Udupi: Mixed reaction to budget in Udupi - 3/17/2007
The HinduUdupi: Vinaykumar Sorake, former MP, has said that the budget presented by Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa was disappointing.
In a press release issued here on Friday, Mr. Sorake said the budget had neglected agriculture and power sectors. The ban on arrack and liquor would prove to be an eyewash. The waiver of farm loan up to Rs. 25,000 would benefit very few farmers, he said. The Government was showing Centrally-sponsored schemes as its own. The way the budget had been formulated made one feel that elections were round the corner, he said. The Udupi district unit of Bharatiya Kisan Sangha said that the budget had neglected the farm sector and the coastal districts.
In a press release, the sangha said though the government had made a loud noise about waiving the loans of farmers, it had reduced the amount of loan to be waived to Rs. 25,000.
The Government had ignored the Varahi Irrigation Project. There was no proposal to construct dams against West-flowing rivers in the district, it said. But the sangha welcomed the proposal of the Government to make the State "arrack free and lottery free". It also welcomed the proposal of pension for farmers.
`Responsive budget'
Lalaji Mendan, BJP MLA from Kaup, said the responsive budget would benefit farmers, agricultural labourers, weavers and fishermen. Increase in the amount of pension for widows and aged was welcome, he said. Extension of the "Akshara Dasoha" midday meal scheme up to SSLC was another milestone of the budget, he added.
K. Raghupati Bhat, BJP MLA from Udupi, said that budget would help in providing social justice to people. The sanctioning of Rs. 1 crore each to start Kanakadasa Samshodhana Kendra and for the proposed 74th All India Kannada Sahitya Sammelan in Udupi, and Rs. 25 lakh for establishing Yakshagana Academy in Udupi were welcome steps, he said.

KEDUR : Anand Bhandary will his body be donated to KMC for research - 3/14/2007
Rocky D'souza, Brahmavar for KMKedur: People like Aishwarya Rai may have caught limelight through his avowed statements that her beautiful rivulet-like (Jheel si ankhen) be donated to the Eye Bank after her death, enable people to see through her beautiful eyes (think crooked world of ours). If this is true of Aishwarya many of our old, decrepit, retired people may resort to isolation, withdrawal, prayers, meditation at places like Amarnath Yathra, Shabari Malai etc. in old age.
But Sri Anand Bhandary is not a person to toe the line. He is made of rare stuff than we the lesser mortals . His thoughtfulness and a spirit of self-sacrifice prepared him mentally to execute a solem act of contributing his dead body for research for our physicials who have a purpose to serve the society.
Anand Bhandary (65 years) of Kundapur taluk in Kedur-Shanadi has come forward to donate his body after his death to KMC, Manipal to help the Medical students for their studies. This seems to be a rare gesture of one’s helpfulness to people around him.
Anand Bhandary had been a fighter throughout his life. Yet he doesn’t seem to forget that our society gives so much to us but rarely do we think of returning the favours received in the society our life time. This thougtfulness on the part of Anand Bhandary has made him execute a will to the effect that his lifeless body after death should belong to KMC and the family people have no right over it.
At a time all people think of the glory with which one’s body is cremated after one’s death, the honour and pomp in which one’s cremation is taking place after death, here is a rare specimen of mortals doing something quite unusual for us the lesser mortals. Well, you can still have faith in our humanity that our ordinary people live exemplied lives that they set ideal for others. This has happened in not-so-well educated or informed elite sections of the society. This has happened with an ordinary person in a mofussil town. Great isn’t it ?
