|USA Rejects Help From 2008 Mumbai Terror Attack Organisation - 10/31/2012
US rejects Hafiz Saeed’s offer of storm aid

WASHINGTON: The United States on Wednesday rejected an offer of help for Americans hit by superstorm Sandy from the founder of a Pakistan-based group blamed for the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, the founder of the banned Lashkar-i-Taiba (LeT) militant outfit who has a $10 million US reward on his head, said his charity Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) was ready to help to those affected by the storm.
Acting State Department spokesman Mark Toner recalled that Saeed is wanted for the 2008 attacks which killed 166 people, including six Americans.
The LeT has also been designated a foreign terrorist organisation by the State Department.
“We have great respect obviously for the Islamic tradition of social assistance to those who are in need, no matter where they might be,” Toner told journalists. But “this particular offer strikes us as very hollow.”
Sandy hammered the eastern United States early on Tuesday, flooding much of New York City, causing a trail of damage across several states and leaving more than 50 people dead.
Saeed, who is now head of JuD, said in a statement his organisation was ready to offer every possible help “volunteers, doctors, food, medicines and other relief items on humanitarian grounds if the US government allows us.” America may have any opinion about us, it may fix bounties on our heads but as followers of the teachings of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), we feel it is our Islamic duty to help Americans trapped in a catastrophe.”
JuD is seen as a front for LeT, and in April the United States offered $10 million for information leading to the arrest or conviction of Saeed, who lives in Pakistan’s eastern city of Lahore.
Saeed’s charity has long denied terror accusations and is known in Pakistan for its relief work after the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and the 2010 floods.
He was put under house arrest a month after the Mumbai attacks, but was later released after Pakistani courts ruled there was insufficient proof to hold him
|Cyclone Nilam Makes Landfall Near Chennai - 10/31/2012
Cyclone Nilam spares Chennai
Storm makes landfall near Mamallapuram; rain claims four lives in Tamil Nadu
Cyclonic storm Nilam, which threatened to hit the Chennai coast, spared the city, but made landfall near Mamallapuram, about 60 km south of Chennai, on Wednesday evening.
Four persons were reported to have died during the day in different parts of the State, but a Revenue department official clarified that Kancheepuram district, where the storm crossed the coast between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., did not report even a single death.
Nilam evoked fears of large-scale destruction among the people in coastal districts in north Tamil Nadu.
The exact details about the landfall would be known on Thursday after an assessment by the Meteorological Department, according to Y.E.A. Raj, Deputy Director General of Meteorology.
Though many areas in the northern belt received heavy rainfall on Tuesday night, the intensity was not much during the day when Nilam made the last leg of its journey. According to a bulletin issued on the basis of observations at 8-30 a.m., the storm lay centred about 260 km south southeast of Chennai, and by 6 p.m, it made landfall.
At the time of crossing the coast, Chennai recorded the maximum wind speed of 75 km per hour and Kalpakkam 65 km per hour. Hereafter, it was expected to weaken rapidly after making northwestward movement.
A holiday has been declared for schools and colleges in all coastal districts, including Chennai, on Thursday.
|India Denies Air Arabia Permission - 10/31/2012
India frustrates Air Arabia
MUMBAI // Air Arabia's expansive ambitions in India are being held back by red tape preventing it from securing the rights it needs to launch more flights into the country.
The carrier had been asking Indian aviation authorities for additional rights "about twice a month", he added. "There are so many other airports in India that we would like to fly to and hopefully we would be allowed to."
A number of countries, including in the Middle East, were reluctant to offer more rights to foreign carriers because they want ed to protect their national carriers, said Mr Ali.
"We wait for the next government-to-government discussion in which we would like to get some more seats into India and if we are granted some more seats by the Indian authorities, we will expand. The difficulty I have is not being able to put numbers because I don't know what the Indian government or the Indian civil aviation authorities will grant us at the next round of talks, when it happens."
Air Arabia had set its sights on some of the underserved destinations in India, said Mr Ali.
"One of the airports for example that we wanted to operate to last year was Chandigarh… and once we get clearance and more traffic rights, we will operate."
Although the government last month announced that it was opening up the aviation sector to up to 49 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI) from foreign airlines, Air Arabia had not had any discussions about investing in any carriers in India and was not looking at taking a stake in an Indian carrier, said Mr Ali. "It's too early," he added.
"I think the fact that FDI has been opened up is good news. I'm sure, with the size of this country, the size of the travelling public and the potential growth, a lot of airlines will be looking at it."

|Heckler At Kejriwal Press Meet - 10/31/2012
Uproar at Kejriwal press meet
New Delhi, Oct 31, 2012, DHNS:
The third exposé by the India Against Corruption (IAC) on Wednesday witnessed a brief uproar when a person from the audience stood up amid a press conference to allege that Arvind Kejriwal and his wife, an Indian Revenue Service Officer, never got transferred for 30 years.
Some people also claimed that the man hurled a slipper at the people sitting on the podium, but missed the target. IAC supporters wanted to shout down the man, but Kejriwal offered to answer his questions. However, there was confusion and he was whisked away from the venue. Later, some people shouted slogans against Kejriwal.
“I want to ask why you and your wife were never transferred out of Delhi,” the man asked.
He did not identify himself and kept on insisting that he was “alone” and not backed by anyone. He claimed to be an “aam aadmi.”
The man then shouted out loudly, “Kejriwal and company are fooling the country.” Kejriwal alleged that the disruption was “deliberate and planned.” But he asserted, “We cannot be silenced.”
|53% Indian Engineering Graduates Lack Employment Skills - 10/31/2012
53 pc IT engg graduates unemployable, rues HRD Minister
New Delhi, Oct 31, 2012, DHNS:
Promises to focus on improving quality of students and teachers
Newly appointed Human Resource Development Minister M M Pallam Raju on Wednesday observed that more than half of the total engineering graduates from Information Technology stream fail to meet industry standards for employment and assured that his ministry would work towards remedying the situation.
“Only 17 per cent of IT engineering graduates are ready for recruitment by industry, 30 per cent can be trained and a whopping 53 per cent do not meet industry standards. This is alarming, we need to work on it,” he told reporters after taking charge of the HRD Ministry.
Answering a question on engineering colleges making fast money through the education route, the minister regretted that “Technical education has become a business”.
He was categorical that his Ministry would encourage only institutions which deliver quality.
Hailing his predecessor Kapil Sibal for his “unprecedented” initiatives in different areas such as capacity building in higher education sector, the Minister said he would focus on consolidating and carrying forward the path set out by Sibal.
“We will give a fillip to the new institutions. We will also focus on consolidation of the existing IITs and IIMs,” he said.
Expressing concern about eroding values among the youth, he said his Ministry would give a thrust to value education in schools.
“The youth are disillusioned with society, while the role of parents and gurus (teachers) has been diluted. There are distractions as well due to technology. The country has a rich heritage based on value system. It is important to make this heritage a part of education and strengthen our democracy through value system,” he added.
Enabling teachers to impart quality education was another area which his Ministry would focus on, he said.
On several bills of the HRD Ministry pending in Parliament, he said he would involve his colleagues—Ministers of State Shashi Tharoor and Jitin Prasada—in bringing parliamentarians on the same page and get the pending bills passed.
