Udupi: Yakshagana artistes should develop historical outlook, says writer - 6/1/2009

The Hindu

Udupi: Writer Prabhakar Shishila said on Sunday that most of the Yakshagana artistes did not have a historical perspective.

He was speaking at the “Kalavidara Samavesha” (artistes conference), organised by Yakshagana Kalaranga here. Mr. Shishila said that many Yakshagana artistes did not have photographs of the roles they had donned in different Yakshagana episodes (“prasangas”). Very few artistes had written their autobiographies.

It would be better if all popular Yakshagana artistes wrote their autobiographies. If they did not know how to write them on their own, they should take the help of good Kannada writers, he said.

Chairman of the Karnataka Yakshagana Academy Kumble Sundar Rao lauded the kalaranga for identifying and felicitating senior Yakshagana artistes.

Udupi: No midday meal at government school in Volakadu on Friday - 5/31/2009

UdayavaniUdupi, May 31: The issue of clogged drains dominated the proceedings of the general body meeting of the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) here on Friday.

Raising the issue, Councillor Shyamprasad Kudva said the newly concreted and widened Udupi-Manipal Road was at least four feet above the ground level. During the pre-monsoon showers, the water on this road flowed to the low-lying areas on both its sides which resulted in flooding of houses and shops in Kalsank, Badagupete, and Kadiyali areas.

Since the Udupi-Manipal Road was built on a height, all the connecting roads which were at a lower level, most notably the Vidyasamudra Road also got flooded. It was incumbent upon the CMC to make some kind of an arrangement so as to facilitate smooth flow of rainwater in the drains to avoid inundation of low-lying areas, Kudva said.

In response, CMC president Dinakar Shetty informed that the Public Works Department was constructing the Udupi-Manipal Road. The stormwater drains were yet to be constructed on either side of this new road. It was the responsibility of the PWD to make arrangements to stop the flooding in the low-lying areas.

Though the CMC had approached the PWD, its attitude was lackadaisical; hence the CMC itself would make arrangements to avoid inundation in the low-lying areas within two days, Shetty said.

Kudva said that many manholes constructed for the underground drainage system under the Karnataka Urban Development and Coastal Environment Management Project (KUDCEMP) had not yet been cleared. This had resulted in many wells getting polluted in Udupi because of clogged manholes.

The Government School authorities at Volakadu could not cook midday meals for its students on the first day of school this academic year on Friday because the well there had got polluted because of a clogged manhole close by, he said.

Shetty directed the Assistant Executive Engineer M.H. Nanjundaswamy to provide immediate tap connection to the Government School at Volakadu. He also directed the officials to immediately clear all clogged manholes in Udupi.

Leader of the Opposition Jayananda said many eateries in Gopalapura area were letting the waste water flow on the roads.

Intervening Dinakar Shetty said that the CMC was carrying out a survey to implement the underground drainage system in Manipal and Gopalpura area. Councillor Anandi pointed out that there was no drinking water supply to the Dalit Colony in Vadabhandeshwara ward for nearly a month despite her several requests to the CMC officials.
Shetty assured her that immediate action would be taken in this regard.

The CMC also decided to allow people who had received huge water bills to pay in instalments.
Udupi: ‘Encourage organic farming’ - 5/31/2009

Udayavani

Udupi, May 31: The former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, R. Dwarakinath, said on Friday that the key to a total revolution in agriculture lay in systematic and organic farming.

He was speaking at a seminar on “Total agriculture revolution” organised by the Bharatiya Vikas Trust, Academy of General Education and Zonal Agricultural Research Station, Brahmavar, at Ravindra Mantap of MGM College on May 29. He said before independence traditional cultivation, then chemical fertilizer cultivation and now organic cultivation is prevalent.

Prof. Dwarakinath said the Green Revolution had only concentrated on increasing the yield without taking into account other factors such as soil, water and climate. Factors such as stability, expansion and job opportunities were essential to attract the youth to agriculture. Nearly 50 per cent of the rural population was dependent on agriculture and farmers were finding it tough to purchase seeds, fertilizers and hire labour. The meagre subsidies provided by the Government did little to help the farmers. To help them to become more enterprising, farmers should be made aware of soil conservation, water management techniques and market conditions.

Dr| Niranjan hereditary and breed specialist of Agriculture University said now cultivation is not based on labour, but based on knowledge and marketing.

K V Nagaraj - General Manager of NABARD, Dr| T R Guruprasad assistant research director of zonal agriculture research center, senior journalist M V Kamath, were the chief guest. Vice-chancellor of Manipal University, secretary of Manipal academy – Dr| H S Ballal presided over the function.

Entrepreneur T Ashok Pai felicitated the guests, K M Udupa administrative director of BVT welcomed, Manipal rural research center director- Dr| Krishna Kotaya gave vote of thanks, Prof| Krishna Bhatt- director of Govinda Pai research center conducted the programme.

Manipal: World No Tobacco day celebrated on 31st May - 5/31/2009

UdayavaniManipal, May 31: 9 lakh deaths in India, annually, from Tobacco usage : 11% of the world’s smokers in India ; Kasturba Hospital to celebrate “No Tobacco Week” from 1st to 5th June – Free Lung Function Test & Examination for Smokers ; Newer Replacement Therapy for Quitting Smoking.

Cigarette smoking is the single biggest avoidable cause of death.

Tobacco usage is risk factor for major diseases like Heart Diseases, Cerebro vascular diseases, lower respiratory tract infections, Chronic Obstructive pulmonary disease, Tuberculosis, Cancer of Trachea, Bronchus and Lung etc. Peptic ulcer is common among smokers.

People near to those who smoke are also at risk as they may develop respiratory problems and are at increased risk of cancer and heart diseases. World No tobacco day is observed every year on 31st may since 1988 to spread awareness among smokers about the health risks and to motivate them to stop smoking. The theme for this yesr is “Tobacco Health Warnings”

Why do people use tobacco ?

Within seconds after inhalation of tobacco smoke, nicotine in the tobacco reaches the brain and enhances concentration, alertness, memory and decrease in tension and anxiety. Nicotine in tobacco causes addiction. The degree of nicotine addiction in a smoker may be minimal to severe. Nicotine controls smoker’s behavior in such a way that reducing or stopping tobacco use produces a withdrawal syndrome. Nicotine withdrawal syndrome characterized by anger, irritability, impatience, restlessness, difficulty in concentration, sleeplessness, anxiety and depressed mood. This is the reason for continuation of smoking. In developing countries, usage of tobacco is decreasing but in developing countries, it is increasing at an alarming rate.

The risk of developing tobacco related diseases is reduced and life expectancy is increased if smoker stops smoking even in old age and the progress of tobacco related disease already present is slowed down once tobacco use is stopped. Chest & Allergy specialists have special interest to treat tobacco addiction as much of the death and disability due to cigarette smoking involves disease of the lungs. Most smokers mistakenly believe that stopping smoking requires only willpower and do not know that effective treatment is available for stopping smoking. Willpower is necessary but not sufficient for success in giving up smoking. It was suggested many years ago that screening smoker’s lung function may be necessary for early detection of respiratory problem as healthy lung function declines faster among regular smokers than non smokers. Cough is common and not troublesome initially in many smokers. This is the reason for many not quitting smoking, but finally ends up with advanced stage of COPD characterized by severe cough, breathlessness and wheezing.

Department of Pulmonary Medicine in Kasturba Hospital, Manipal is observing “No Tobacco Week” and offering free lung function test and examination for smokers with lung problems and also guiding them to stop smoking with tobacco replacement therapy. The free lung health check up camp is scheduled at the OPD of Department of Pulmonary Medicine from 1st June to 5th June 2009.
