Manipal: Intl communication fest from February 26 to 28 - 2/25/2009
UdayavaniManipal, February 25: Article-19, a three day International Communication fest of Manipal Institute of Communication (MIC) will commence on February 26. The valedictorywill be held on February 28 with the distribution of “Express Awards” at MIC premises.
Speaking to the media here on Tuesday student Convener Ramanathan S informed that the fest will be inaugurated by Manipal University Registrar G K Prabhu while and Krishna Mariyanka, Director-Consultant of Aikya Global, a well-known media and communications consulting company will be the Guest of Honour. MIC has received more than 100 entries including 19 international entries from USA, England, Philippines, Egypt, Scotland, UAE and France, he added.
The second edition of Manipal Media Student’s Convention will also be a part of Article-19 this year in which Kiruba Shankar, one of the founders of The Knowledge Foundation and the CEO of Business Blogging Private Limited is participating. Former Vice President (Ad-sales) of DNA, Mumbai, Nishindra Varma, Director of Fame Game entertainment Girish Ranade and Krishna Mariyanka will be talking to the students about their respective fields.
Prahlad Kakkar, popularly known as the “Madman of ad world” will conduct a workshop on the first day of the event. Besides, during the three day event there will be workshops by many other prominent people of their respective field including Sankalp Meshram, editor and film maker and renowned journalist Sandhya Ravishankar.
“Power off for an hour” – a unique event, will also be a part of the fest this year. Conceptualised as a drive against reckless power consumption, the event will try to create complete awareness among students regarding the importance of saving electricity. Darkness will take over Manipal for an hour between eight and nine pm, on February 27, to enlighten young minds.
More than two thousand students have already taken the oath to shut off their lights during that hour to show their solidarity towards this cause.
Renowned actor-screenwriter-director-social activist Rahul Bose who has been involved with several noble causes will also be a part of the awareness march, where he will travel through the roads of Manipal along with all the participating students.
Fun fair will be organised on February 26 from seven pm, where participants can let their hair down for sometime amidst their rigorous workshop schedules for the next two days.
Express awards in various categories including Radio, Animation, Graphics, Journalism (Print), Journalism (TV), Ad (Print), Ad (TV), Photography, Short Film and Documentary will be distributed to the successful participants on the third day to mark the finale of the fest, Ramanathan informed.
MIC Joint Director Sudhir Sakhuja, Elvin Jacob, Manjusha Hebbar and others were present at the press meet.

Udupi: Udupi Car Street as vehicle-free zone under consideration of authorities - 2/24/2009
The HinduUdupi: The Car Street, where the Sri Krishna Math/Temple and Ashta Maths are located, is visited by a large number of devotees from across the country, besides the local people. But, in view of growing security concerns and the traffic congestion there, the authorities have been contemplating on making the Car Street a vehicle-free zone.
Deputy Commissioner P. Hemalatha told The Hindu that there was no immediate plan to make the Car Street into a vehicle-free zone. However, the authorities were trying to identify a suitable place for a vehicle parking slot. Ms. Hemalatha said: “After the November 26, 2008 terrorist attack in Mumbai, security at the Car Street has become a priority. The security in the area has been beefed up and it has been decided to install cameras at Sri Krishna temple and various other points in the area.”
Dinakar Shetty, president of Udupi City Municipal Council, said there was no concrete plan on this issue. The move to make Car Street a vehicle-free zone has been opposed by the shopkeepers there. They have formed an association, “Nalku Veethi Nivasigala Vedike, to fight against the implementation of this proposal.
According to Anil Prabhakar Pai, president of the vedike, 120 shopkeepers have become its members.

Udupi: Udupi advocates boycott courts - 2/20/2009
The HinduUDUPI: Members of Udupi Bar Association boycotted the proceedings of the courts at the District Court Complex here on Friday protesting against the recent amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code by the Centre.
Secretary of the Bar Association Dinesh Naik said the advocates were protesting against amendments to Sections 41 and 309 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
These amendments were a retrograde step, he said.

Udupi: Yakshagana artistes to get pension - 2/20/2009
The HinduUdupi: Yakshagana artistes above 60 years and whose annual income is not above Rs. 3,600 are entitled to a monthly pension of Rs. 1,000 by the State Government, according to a press release from Karnataka Yakshagana Academy member Murali Kadekar. Those interested in availing the pension can get the application forms from the offices of either the Yakshagana Kalaranga at the Admar Math Lane or the Assistant Director of the Department of Kannada and Culture.

Udupi: Man gets threat calls, receives police protection - 2/19/2009
The HinduUdupi: Augustine Menezes, resident of Vasuki Nagara, Ambagilu here, allegedly received threat calls on Wednesday night. The Udupi Town Police said on Thursday that Augustine Menezes had lodged a complaint with them about the threat calls on his cellphone and protection had been provided to him. The caller had allegedly informed Mr. Menezes that he was an office-bearer of Bajrang Dal and had connections with Sri Rama Sene.

Udupi: ‘Varna Beedi’ art camp - 2/19/2009
The HinduUdupi: The Udupi Zilla Chitrakala Padavidharara Okoota and Chitrakala Mandir School of Art would be organising a two-day art camp titled “Varna Beedi” at the Car Street here from February 21.
Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, general secretary of the okoota Raghavendra Amin said that 20 artists and 10 students of the Chitrakala Mandir School of Art would be participating in the camp.
The 20 artists, including himself (Mr. Amin), who would be participating in the camp are K.L. Bhat, P.N. Acharya, Ramesh Kediyoor, Satyashankar Rao, Shivadas Nisarga, Ganesh Mandara, Manjunath Bailoor, Raghavendra Chatramakki, Rajendra Trasi, Jagadish Acharya, Dayesh Karkera, Sunil Ontibettu, S. Udupi: Madivalas seek SC tag - 2/19/2009
The HinduUdupi: The Udupi district unit of Madivala Seva Samaj has demanded that the Madivala community in the State be given the Scheduled Caste status.
Speaking to presspersons here on Thursday, its president Suresh Madivala said that the people belonging to the Madivala community were backward and required better facilities. The Social Welfare Commissioner of the Government had sought ethnographic details of the community from all the districts. Census
The samaj had conducted a census of the Madivala community in Udupi district.
There were about 24,000 people belonging to this community. While some Madivalas spoke Kannada, others spoke Tulu or Konkani language. Nearly 90 per cent of the Madivala community were in rural areas of the district. Occupation
About 70 per cent to 80 per cent of Madivalas were carrying on with their family occupation of laundering clothes. Nearly 95 per cent of them were living below the poverty line and their daily earnings were between Rs. 30 and Rs. 40.
Hence this community should be recognied as a Scheduled Caste, Mr. Suresh Madivala said.
Leaders of the samaj Ananda Madivala, Shyamala Kundar, Shekhar Madivala, Krishna N. Salian and Bharati Chandrashekhar were present.

Udupi: Exhibition of Karanth ballet not the violation of copy right: Supreme court - 2/18/2009
The HinduUdupi, February 18: The orders of Supreme court has stated that the copy right rule of 1957 has not been violated through the exhibition of Yakshagana Ballet created by Dr| Kota Shivaram Karantha and the permanent stay orders of High court also have not been violated.
‘Yakshagana Ranga’ of MGM college trust had exhibited a ballet at Delhi on 18th September 2001. Malini Malya had appealed to the court that this was a violation of the copy rights she possessed. The district court had partially agreed Malya’s appeal. The high court had rejected the defendants appeal so they appealed to Supreme Court.
It will not the violation of copy right when research is undertaken and literature, drama, music or artistic work is used for private purpose. An educational institution as a part of its activities exhibits such copyright protected materials free of cost with the help of people direct related to the institution, parents, guardians, staffs, students, to a limited number of audience, then it won’t be a violation of copy rights, stated the supreme court.
The copy right held by Malya , permanent stay order of high court has not been violated, as the appealer is related to the educational trust and as it is an habitual group said the court.
Dr| Karanth was the executive director of ‘Yakshagana kendra’ for three years, and had created seven yakshagana ballets ‘Bhishma Vijya’, ‘Nala Damayanthi’, ‘Kanakangi Kalyana’, ‘Abhimanyu Vade’, ‘Chitrangadha or Babruvahana Kalaga’, ‘Panchavati’ and ‘Gangacharitha’.

Udupi: ‘Ashotsava’ gets under way in Udupi - 2/18/2009
The HinduUdupi: A cultural and sports competition titled “Ashotsava-2009” for students of special schools got off to a start at the Asha Nilaya Special School here on Wednesday.
Inaugurating the competitions, Pramod Madhwaraj, president of the Dakshina Kannada Mogaveera Mahajana Sangha, said the Government should give more funds to such schools. These schools were rendering remarkable service to society by taking care of children with special needs. Their importance should not be undermined, he said.
Psychiatrist P.V. Bhandary, president of the Ashotsava Committee Sam Daniel, general manager of the Badagabettu Cooperative Society Jayakar Shetty Indrali and zonal president of the Church of South India Rev. Bukart Berty Ammanna were present. Earlier, president of the Udupi City Municipal Council Dinakar Shetty flagged off a procession at Hotel Kediyoor to highlight issues connected with children with special needs. The procession passed through Kavi Muddana Road, Diana Circle, Taluk Office Road, Mission Hospital Road and ended at Asha Nilaya.
