Udupi: Roadworks to begin soon: Minister - 2/11/2009

Udupi: Home Minister V.S. Acharya said here on Wednesday that work on widening the Kadiyali-Manipal Road here would be undertaken shortly.

Briefing presspersons after the tri-monthly Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) meeting, Mr. Acharya said the Kadiyali-Manipal Road would be widened at a cost of Rs. 12 crore. Tenders had already been floated for the purpose. The Syndicate Circle-End Point Road and the Ambagilu-Manipal Road would be upgraded as they provided direct access to the district offices complex, which was coming up at the End Point in Manipal. Work on widening the Bannanje-Kadiyali Road was on the verge of completion. “The district offices complex is expected to be ready for use by the end of this year,” he said.

The Minister said the Government had leased out the Brahmavar Cooperative Sugar Factory so that farmers could be benefited. The Government proposed to sell 10 acres of factory land to clear dues to farmers.

Owing to a stay order on the sale of the factory, the private company to which the lease had been granted had been taking things slow. Deputy Commissioner P. Hemalatha would hold talks with the company management urging it to take active interest in reviving the factory, he said. Permanent ration cards would be provided to all persons who had applied for it at the Nemmadi Kendras in the district, from March 25 onwards. A sum of Rs. 2 crore had been released for the repair of roads belonging to the Fisheries Department, he said. Mr. Acharya said the Government’s awareness campaign on terrorism for students would be held in Manipal on February 14. Nearly 15,000 students were expected to participate.

Power problem

Mr. Acharya said the Government was trying its best to resolve the power problem in the State. There was no scheduled power cut in Udupi so far, but added that occasionally unscheduled ones took place.


Manipal: 'State achieves 100 % financial inclusion' - 2/10/2009

UdayavaniManipal , February 10: As many as 51 per cent of the Indian population is deprived from the financial inclusion and this social inequality should not continue for long in the growing economy like India, observed Syndicate Bank Chairman and Managing Director George Joseph.

Speaking after inaugurating the 10th seminar on ‘Financial inclusion’ organised by Indian Institute of Banking and Finance (IIBF), Mumbai in association with Syndicate Institute of Bank Management (SIBM) Manipal and Justice K S Hegde Institute of Management (JKSHIM) Nitte, here on Monday, he said despite the fact that 51 per cent are in the deprived sector Karnataka is one State in the entire country that has achieved 100 per cent financial inclusion including in the rural areas. Syndicate bank has initiated 8 financial literacy and counselling centers all over India to create financial awareness among people. Two are at Bijapur and Chikkodi in Karnataka.

He said rural folks are excluded from the financial advantages and marginalised people should be brought under finacial inclusion. Many zero balance accounts continue to exist and there are as many as 4.5 lakh zero balance accounts in the Syndicate bank. Total number of 32.5 lakh no frill accounts are there in Syndicate bank till date. The ground reality behind the exclusiveness from the banking sector of the rural folk is the fact that money lenders are still active in rural areas and the people depend on the unorganised financial sector, he added.
There are as many as 4500 pigmy agents in the Syndicate Bank and 1,800 has been added to the account recently Rs 6 crore is being collected from the pigmy scheme, Joseph informed.

Syndicate bank has opened biometric ATM in Bagalkota and Jai Kissan programme to liquidate the money lenders account. It has tied up with government of Karnataka to issue smart cards in the process of avoiding the 15 per cent fake claims of the pension scheme. Syndicate Bank is initiating as many as 3 lakh smart cards in collaboration with Canara bank and State Bank. Bellary will be the pilot project of the programme. A farmer training college in Karnataka will be opened up shortly. About 31 training institutes are working out at various places and these centers are opened up in association with Canara bank and RUDSET. About 2.5 lakh people are trained in the 9 rural development institutes initiated by the Syndicate bank, he said

Speaking on the occasion JKSHIM Academic Council Chairman Dr N K Thingalaya said financial landscapes are littered with the debris of the banking sector in India. Most of farmers’ suicide case was reported from the house holds that were in debt with the rural money lenders.

There is a huge gap between urban and rural households, he added.

Udupi: Run against terrorism held - 2/9/2009

UdayavaniManipal , February 9: Synd Bank Udupi Marathon -2009 the “Run against terrorism” organised by the Udupi District Athletic Association and sponsored by Syndicate bank manifested a splendid confluence of spirit, audacity and brave besides spreading the message of harmony to fight against terrorism.

The run was flagged off from Syndicate bank Head office on Sunday. Syndicate Bank MD and Chairman George Joseph flagged off the half marathon of 21 kms for both men and women. International Athlete and Ekalavya Awardee Poonam Bojanna signaled for the 5 km run of the under 16 category and Udupi RTO Omkareshwari flagged off the senior citizens marathon.

The runners were encouraged by the’ special youth of the day,’ a 93-year old A J Mounis who ran for 5 kms senior citizens category with the same vigour and dynamism.

Bollywood actor Sunil Shetty’s presence made the event more sensational and in fact the dais offered a fabulous treat with politics, bureaucracy, sports, banking sector and glamour joining hands for a noble cause. The winners who grabbed the Hero Honda Glamour and Hero Honda Pleasure respectively in men and women category were Elam Singh from Army Sports Institute Pune and Preeja Sridharan from South Railways.

Arvind Yadav from South East Railways and Mukesh Kumar from Railways took away the second and third place respectively in men’s category.

Kavitha Rauth of ONGC and Preethi Rao from Karnataka Railways were the winners of the second and third place in the women’s category.

The second prize winner received a cash prize of Rs 15,000 and the third prize winner took away Rs 10,000 in both men’s and women’s 21 km run.

In senior citizen category the winners were K L Patil from Mysore (1st place), B Krishna Reddy from Hyderabad (2nd place) and Y Kumaraswami from Kabbinale (3rd).

Arunkala S Rao from Bommarabettu band Padmini from Udupi wan the first and second place in women’s category.

Bhimappa and Karyappa from Bagalkota won the first and second place in the Boys under 16 run category and Akshatha P L and Akshatha S from Alva’s were the winners in the girls category. Home Minister V S Acharya, Dakshina Kannada DC V Ponnuraj, Udupi CMC President Dinaker Shetty and others were present.
Udupi: Workers federation stages dharna - 2/9/2009

SHIMOGA: Members of the Shimoga District General and Industrial Workers’ Federation staged a dharna in support of their demands.

Their demands include extension of facilities under the Central Labour Welfare Department to beedi and other workers in the State, establishment of a health unit for beedi workers, ensuring the availability of food and other essential commodities at affordable prices, introduction of minimum wages and revival of all industrial units that were closed down following the economic slowdown. A memorandum containing the demands was submitted to the district administration.

The demonstration was a precursor to the labour protest in front of the Samsad Bhavan in Delhi on February 18.

Megaravalli Raghavendra, Konagadde Yogish, Anil Kumar, Puttaswamy, Ravikumar and Babasab led the demonstration.


Udupi: Laundrymen community seek facilities - 2/4/2009

UdayavaniUdupi , February 4: Udupi District Laundrymen Welfare Association demanded that the laundrymen must be provided with health insurance facilities, concessions in the power tariffs and pension facility for the retired laundry laborers.


Speaking to the mediapersons, President Umesh Bailur said as many as 3,500 families in the district who practice the profession. The community comprises more than 40 lakh population in the State and has remained economically and educationally backward for the past several decades. Government should help the community to get rid of the impediments by announcing welfare programmes. Government should facilitate for the introduction of the sophisticated and necessary infrastructure for the laundries, he added. The Association will sumbit a memorandum to Home Minister Dr V S Acharya, he informed.

Kundapur: Konkani sahitya sammelan on February 7, 8 - 2/3/2009

Udupi: The 19th Konkani Sahitya Sammelan of Akhila Bharat Konkani Parishath will be held at Kundapur in Udupi district on February 7 and 8.

Sammelan reception committee president H. Shantharam said that nearly 10,000 people would be attending the sammelan.

About 3,000 delegates would be participating in the sammelan.


Udupi: CBROA conference - 2/3/2009

Udupi: The Corporation Bank Retired Officers Association (CBROA) will be holding its seventh All India Conference here on February 6. Its president K. Achutha Shenoy told presspersons here on Tuesday that the CBROA had introduced several schemes for the welfare of its members.

It had contributed to various funds, including Kargil relief, tsunami, and flood and earthquake reliefs.

District and Sessions Judge K.N. Phaneendra, and chairman and managing director of Corporation Bank J.M. Garg would be among the chief guests at the conference, he said.

Owner of Diana hotel Mohandas Pai expires

Udupi, February 2: Founder of Diana hotel Mohandas Pai breathed his last on February 1st due to cardiac arrest. He was hospitalized recently in the KMC hospital but the treatment was in vain. He was known for introducing some of the special and variety of delicacies to the customers in Udupi. He succeeded in gaining the customer’s taste and thus was an eminent hotellier.

In the year 1962 he started the hotel in a small way. Soon there was an increase in the business and later he extended it in the year 1980. He also started catering and expanded it in the year 2000. He also takes the credit for introducing special delicacies like Poori Kurma, Cutlet, Gadbad which are some of the famous items demanded by the customers even now. The quality of the delicacies is still the same as it was before and this is the specialty of the hotel.

The hotel is prominent as family restaurant as it serves its customers with great respect. Even now the people from Mumbai, Bangalore have made it a habit to visit the hotel and have coffee as it has maintained its quality and service.

Pai was not only an eminent businessman but was also involved in the religious, cultural and social service programmes. He was the managing administrator of Malpe Sri Durparameshwari temple and also worked for its progress. A patron of theatre activities, Pai was the honorary president of Rangabhoomi, Udupi. He also served as the president and honorary president of Udupi Hotel Owner’s Association. He was also an active member of Lions club and had represented the hotel sector at the Lions convention held in the Miami Beach of America.

Mohandas Pai is survived by wife, a son and three daughters.

Home minister Dr V S Acharya, MLA Raghupathi Bhat, Former MLA Vasant Salian, municipal councilor Dinaker Shetty, former MP Vinay Kumar Sorake, Manorama Madhwaraj, Former MLA U R Sabhapathy, industrialist Pramod Madhwaraj, Abdul Zaleel, Gujjadi Prabhaker Naik, P Ramesh Naik, Anand Ganiga of Rangabhoomi, C Vaikunt Kamath of District Hotel Owners association and others paid their tributes to Pai and condoled their hearty sympathies to the family.


Udupi: Grand 'Shrinivasa Kalyanotsava' in Udupi Shri Krishna Kshetra - 2/1/2009

UdayavaniUdupi, February 1: On the basis of Lord Shrinivasa entered into wedlock with Padmavathi at Tirumale on Vaishakha Shudha Dashami on Tuesday, similarly Lord Shrinivasa entered into wedlock with Padmavathi in Udupi, the Shri Krishna Kshetra on the auspicious Vaishakha Shudha Panchami of Sarvadhari Samvatsara on Saturday.

'Venkata-Krishna Nityotsava' was inaugurated as per the agreement between Paryaya Shri Puttige Mutt and Tirupathi Temple and 'Kalyanotsava' was held at Godhooli Muhoortha in the evening, under the leadeship of Shri Sugunendra Theertha Shripada of Paryaya Shri Puttige Mutt. Shri Raghumanya Theertha Shripada of Shri Bheemanakatte Mutt was present. 'Kalyanotsava' was organised by Anandatheerthachar Pagadal, special officer of 'Dasa Sahitya Project' Thirupathi Temple. Several notable persons such as Dr V S Acharya – Home Minister, K Raghupathi Bhat – MLA, Dinakara Shetty – Udupi Muncipality President, Harikrishna Punarooru Former President of 'Karnataka Sahitya Parishat' were present. Veda Vidwamsas of Thirupathi chanted several 'Veda Mantras'. Shesha Dasa of Rayachooru, Sangeetha Balachandra Team of Udupi sang several 'Dasa Keerthanas'. Rajangana was rushed with large number of spectators. 'Dasara Hadugalu' and 'Kolata' performed by 'Matas' enthralled devotees.

Puttige Shripada honoured Thirupathi Venkatramana with cash of Rs 1 Lakh. Adikeshavulu Naydu, Trustee of Thirupathi Temple announced the idea of Constructing 'Venkatesha Kalyana Mantapa' if there is place for such construction in Udupi. In turn Puttige Shripada announced about his co-operation for construction of 'Kalyana Mantapa'.


Project of Constructing a Giant 'Goshala' in Thirupathi :

D K Adikeshavulu Naydu, trustee of Thirupathi Temple revealed about Giant 'Goshala' project in 700 acres area of land which is 60kms far away from the temple. And will be inaugurated in February.

“There is a very close relation between Cattle and Lord Shrinivasa. Now a days nearly 600 ltrs of milk is distributed to devotees. And there is aim of distributing milk will upto 1,500 ltrs.
Kalyana Mantapa will be constructed in case, place is provided in Udupi. It includes the facility for lodging also. Thirupathi Temple provides help for development of other temples. Aim of the temples is the 'Bhajana Mandalis' all over the nation should actively particapate in their operation. Now i am happy to inaugurate 'Nityotsava' in Shrikrishna Kshetra said Adikeshavulu.”

There is no doubt in the arrival of 'Krathayuga' instead of 'Kaliyuga' if temples organise their operations in right manner said Shri Sugunendra Theertha Shripada of Shri Puttige Mutt – Leader of the project. Permanent bond between Krishna and Venkatesh is already built up in addition to the relationship of Panduranga and Vittala.
